Does Rolfing®
help with back pain?

How Rolfing can help relieve back Pain (and improve posture long-term):

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek bodywork or Rolfing for that matter.

If you’ve tried massage, stretching, or chiropractic care and still feel stuck in the same patterns, Rolfing® Structural Integration may offer a new & effective method of treatment.

Rather than focusing only on where your back hurts, Rolfing looks at how your entire body is organized, and how tension patterns elsewhere may be contributing to your back pain.

As good as a back massage can feel when we have a painful back,

back pain is rarely just a “back problem.” Accordingly, receiving treatment on just the back may subdue the pain for just a while.

Common contributing factors of back pain include:

  • Uneven weight distribution in the pelvis when standing or walking

  • Tight fascia in the hips, calves, or neck.

  • Old injuries that the body compensates around; we may feel those compensations as new tightness far from the actual injury. Since the tightness was a compensation for a problem elsewhere, treating just the tightness may not resolve the root cause

When the body compensates for structural issues over time, the spine often bears the load, which can lead to stiffness, discomfort, or a recurring flare-up.

Rolfing treats back pain by re-aligning the surrounding anatomical structures to support smooth and distributed weight bearing down the spine, pelvis, and leg.

The important thing is knowing where structural support is lacking, not just where pain is.

Aligning fascia and bony structures (like the pelvis) develops the structural support across your body. As this develops, your back muscles won't need to work as hard to keep you upright. As movement becomes more anatomically efficient, where might those now extra & freed up resources go?

Commonly, with a Rolfed body, many re-enter their lives with new vitality and resilience.
